Arkanoid - Rank B

START HERE if you're new to the column.

ROM Filename: arkanoid
Developer: Taito
Publisher: Taito
Date: December 1986

Also available on Nintendo DS, and revamped as Arkanoid Live! for download on Xbox Live Arcade, and Arkanoid Plus! for download on WiiWare

Arkanoid is an evolution of Breakout, the ancient '70s Atari "classic" wherein you control a paddle to keep a ball bouncing toward a wall of bricks. It's simple: paddle bounce ball to wall to break out, comprende?

Arkanoid added a "story" and various power-ups: make your paddle longer, make the ball slower, fire lasers from your paddle, etc. It had a number of essentially identical sequels: Tournament Arkanoid, Arkanoid - Revenge of DOH, and Arkanoid Returns. The ROM filenames for them are: 'arkatour', 'arknoid2', and 'arkretrn' respectively.

You'll want to rig these to control with your mouse; analog sticks are far too sensitive, and mapping them to digital buttons isn't much better. If you're totally nerdcore and actually own a dial controller, that would be the closest to the arcade experience.

Arkanoid and its spawn have been released on just about every conceivable platform up to the original PlayStation. Most recently, it hit the Nintendo DS handheld, Xbox Live Arcade, and WiiWare. However, barring an actual dial controller, it's best played via emulation on the PC with a mouse.
