Blazing Star - Rank B

START HERE if you're new to the column.

ROM Filename: blazstar and neogeo (required for all Neo Geo games)
Developer: Yumekobo
Publisher: SNK
Date: 1/18/1998

I typically prefer vertically scrolling shooters over side scrollers, but Blazing Star isn't half bad. It's the sequel to the solid Pulstar, and while fans rightfully prefer its predecessor, Blazing Star does bring quite a bit to the table.

The controls are responsive and simple. You mash the fire button to pew! pew!, and hold it down for a charge shot. There is a second button as well, that splits the charge shot.

The visuals are terrific, with complex 3D-ish prerendered sprites and richly animated backgrounds. The soundtrack is about as good as you'll find in an arcade game. You have your choice of a large variety of ships featuring varying characteristics. It's a fairly weird game though, culminating in a final boss fight against a giant cosmic cyborg baby that spews out smaller cosmic cyborg babies.

The best part of the game might be its mangled Engrish translation. The game exhorts you to "GET IT MORE" when you snag power ups and bonuses, and mocks you with "WAKING UP?" when you lose a life. Boss fights are announced with "HOW HUGE THAT IS!" and "DON'T BE PANIC!" If you should fail to defeat that boss, you're slapped with "YOU FAIL IT! YOUR SKILL IS NOT ENOUGH, SEE YOU NEXT TIME, BYE-BYE!"

I didn't realize there was a plot until the end sequence. Running the risk of spoilers, here it is:

IT WAS DESTROYED "BRAWSHELLA" THE EVIL WEAPON AS THE RINGLEADER. NOW, IT IS BROUGHT THE END OF THE INTERPLANETARY WAR BETWEEN THE REMUIRA AND THE MUTRAS, BY SOLDIERS WHO WAKE UP TO THE HUMAN HEART. ALSO PEOPLE HAVE BEEN CAPTURED BY BRAWSHELLA IS LIBERATED. PEACE MUST COME BACK SOON. THE SOLDIERS GO AWAY TO SEEK A PLACE WHERE THEY CAN LIVE IN PEACE, WITH A STRONG WISH THAT SUCH A WAR NEVER BREAK OUT AGAIN.

Somebody got paid cash money to write about the epic struggle to defeat the tyranny of Brawshella, the giant cosmic cyborg baby.

Blazing Star also saw release for the Neo Geo home console.
