w00t! This is where the series hits puberty. 1941 continues the same formula as its predecessors, only in a package that's more palatable to the modern gamer. Nothing much has changed in terms of game mechanics - the only addition to your arsenal is a charge shot, which is useful against tougher targets. It's just that 1941's hectic variety is a huge upgrade in gameplay. Instead of the repetitive waves of enemy planes, you now have to contend with missiles, flamethrowers, turrets, and well designed stage bosses. The graphics and music are much improved, offering greater quality and variety. 1941's little touches, like scrolling the screen diagonally where appropriate, or better balanced power ups, bring this series to life.

Also, a revamped semi-sequel was released on the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 as 1942: Joint Strike.
