Nintendo Girls Club
Here's something you may or may not know - Nintendo has a Youtube channel designed specifically for girls. Never mind that girls and guys play the same games and can appreciate the same kinds of marketing - this is a channel devoted to making sure that girls continue to be 'girly' by listening to barely-famous paid actresses pretending to enjoy Animal Crossing: New Leaf.
While it's cool that Nintendo is trying to broaden its horizons, I have to question the merits of making a channel that reinforces just about every gender stereotype known to man (or woman). It would have been really cool to see Nintendo pitching 3DS games such as Fire Emblem: Awakening at young girls. Instead, there's a grim predictability to the channel - it advertises games such as New Style Boutique and New Art Academy, because they're pretty games about clothing and making things look nice.
I can't help but feel that the decision to make this channel is a bit archaic. My girlfriend's favourite game is Red Dead Redemption; my best friend's favourite game is Fallout 3. Even girls I know who aren't particularly big gamers like Assassin's Creed. I don't think it's really necessary to promote 'obvious' games to girls, even if the target audience is young - I think it would be much more interesting to see pitches for Bravely Default or Pokemon.
Or, better yet, have no girl channel at all, and just keep all your videos on the main Nintendo channel - a channel that I'm sure already has its fair share of female subscribers.
Is this the face that launched 1,000 3DS systems?:
