What Are The Kids Playing?

Unless you're a parent, chances are you don't get much time to sit down with younger gamers and ask them about the kinds of video games they like to play. This potentially skewers your perspective as an adult - sure, you might hear prepubescents swearing while playing Call of Duty over the in-game chat, but are first-person shooters the only games kids like to play? I investigated and asked five kids aged 7-10 about the types of games they're interested in. These are my findings:

Frank 'Fig' Newton, 9 - "My favourite video game is Grand Theft Auto V on the Xbox 360. I play it after school every day. My mum tries to make me do my homework first but I quote Trevor and say, 'Fuck you'. That makes her stop asking me. I also like Assassin's Creed - the one with pirates. I enjoy being a pirate. I stabbed a captain and he fell down. I like to drive the boat and be a pirate."

Lauren Matterly, 7 - "I like to play Neopets on my iPad and Candy Crush. I don't like games where I have to hurt people or be mean. My brother plays bad games where you hurt people and are mean. I like cute games like Candy Crush. I like the game with the animals. I pet the giraffe and then I feed it the hay. He doesn't like the hay very much. What do giraffes eat?"

Kai Marley, 10 - "I play a lot of Pokemon X. A lot of the time I play it with friends online so a lot of my friends enjoy Pokemon X too. On my [3]DS I also have Yoshi['s New Island], Mario[3D Land]...my parents won't let me download games but I want to download a game. I might get Kirby [Triple Deluxe]. I know these games from my dad."

Jimmy Stone, 10 - "I like Mario Kart Wii. I am looking forward to Mario Kart Wii U. I play it with my family. We got the game when I was 7 years old and we still play it. We play Wii Fit and Wii Play. I like to do exercise. I like Donkey Kong [Tropical Freeze] as well because I like animals. Monkeys are ugly, though. Ooo-ahh-ahh-ahh!"

Myrtle Myrtle, 7 - "I praise Bioshock Infinite for its idiosyncratic level design, stellar production values and unique blend of cultural appropriation and refined shooting mechanics over Bioshock 2. I also adore Call of Duty: Ghosts and Dragon's Dogma and The Last of Us, the last of which is possibly the best game I have played in the 6 years I have been playing video games. Gone Home is like manna from the Gods to me and Dear Esther? Forget about it."

So, as you can see from the above sample, kids these days are playing a wide variety of games across an array of platforms and genres. Case closed!
