This'll Put Some Gas In Your Tank
In what is almost undoubtedly the smartest marketing move Nintendo has made for the Wii U so far, eager customers who pre-order Mario Kart 8 at Best Buy will receive $10 off of petrol. Not only does this make thematic sense - karts have to run off of something, right? - but it's also clever because it will, in theory, rope in a lot of customers who might have otherwise ordered the game elsewhere (and the promo may bring a few people into the fold who otherwise didn't know of the game). I spoke to three people about their opinions on this new, bold move by Nintendo for marketing Mario Kart 8:
'Happy' Hal Hogarth, 37: "Vroom Vroom! Hear that? That's the sound of my awesome Mercedes outside. I shop at Best Buy because I trust them to provide me with the best service at affordable prices. What's that? Mario Kart thingy-ma-jig is available for pre-order? And it's on the Wii U? Is that an add-on to the Wii? I already have that game if so - my favourite track is the one in space. Oh, it's a different gaming device...and it can save me money on fuel? Ah, very well...I will make this purchase...for great justice! Now, if you'll excuse me, I must pile my $10 worth of fuel into my big, bold car and make a statement as I drive it around town! Chortle!"
Paul Matteson, 21: "I'm all about the Mario Kart
. I really can't wait to play this game. I'm going to play as a Koopaling and boss it up over my friends online. I wonder if this one is going to get a designated channel like the Wii version? If there's no Mario Kart
app on my Wii U home-page after I pick this up I'm going to be furious! I drive a lot of the time to my job and I firmly believe in the ethos of, 'Every little helps'. If pre-ordering this game at Best Buy will save me money - and if I was going to be there anyway to pick up other stuff - then why the heck not, right? Beats picking the game up on Amazon where the only bonus is the potential for the disc to have fallen out of its case claws, clattering around the box and scratching the CD."
Myrtle Myrtle, 7: "Mario Kart
will forever be a staple of Nintendo intellectual property. It has transcended its early beginnings on the SNES platform to being the most sought-after Wii U title to date. The promotional efforts underpinning the game's imminent release are a testament to this - and this Best Buy offer, while seeming nominal in nature, could potentially drive some much-needed sales towards Nintendo's Wii U home console. It's a no-brainer: if you're a Nintendo fan, or even just a fan of fun and frantic video games, I urge you to pick up Mario Kart 8
. The gameplay videos and comprehensive trailers do not lie: this game will be tremendously enjoyable and I hope this promotion puts some fuel into Nintendo's fire."
