Bomberman Blast (WiiWare) - Rank B

Developer: Hudson Soft
Publisher: Hudson Soft
Date: 9/29/08

Over a year ago, Xbox 360 owners received Bomberman Live. With some minor variants, this is the same experience dropped onto the Wii. The next couple paragraphs are completely relevant excerpts from that review, followed by details specific to the WiiWare version:

"Despite the fact that Hudson has released 283 bazillion versions of the game over the years, many gamers don't know what it is. You control this little guy who throws down bombs in a destructible maze, in an effort to sizzle your opponents before their bombs (or your own) do the same to you. Bomberman features various power ups, puzzle-action mechanics, some modicum of strategy, and is one of the most entertaining multiplayer experiences of all time. Any of you who've huddled around a Sega Saturn hooting and hollering curses and shouts of victory at each other know exactly what I mean.

Unfortunately, Bomberman's publisher kept trying to develop crappy variants of single player platforming, adventuring and exploration Bomberman games - and trying to charge us full retail for the pain. [WiiWare is an excellent home] for this classic character, as the multiplayer awesomeness has been distilled into a simple, no-fuss $10 download."

The WiiWare version supports up to 8 player madness, including local play assuming you have four Wiimotes and four GameCube controllers. You could only assemble eight player groups online in the Xbox 360 version. This makes for an excellent party game (as long as the partiers are gamers). There's also the usual "jiggle the Wiimote" nonsense sprinkled into the game.

I still recommend the Xbox 360 version due to the convenience of their Xbox Live online network. I'm downgrading this game a full rank because of the Wii's nonsensically pain-in-the-ass system of "friend codes" for online connectivity. Nevertheless, if you don't have an Xbox 360, Bomberman Blast is a quality release of a classic multiplayer game.
