Assault Heroes is yet another "dual stick shooter" - you move with the left stick and shoot with the right. This time, you control a dune buggy armed to the teeth. Using three different weapons (minigun, flamethrower, and cannon) in a paper/rock/scissor fashion, and the obligatory screen clearing emergency nuke, you blast your way through several vertically scrolling levels. Assault Heroes is an unabashed homage to arcade games of yore, but is unfortunately terribly generic.

It hits all of the right notes: bright graphics, cheerful audio, power ups, boss fights, and waves of bullet spewing enemies to mow down. Sadly, the controls and pacing are sluggish. If I had come across this as an arcade cabinet in my misbegotten youth, I wouldn't have dropped more than two quarters into it. To be fair, the design and graphics are attractive. Assault Heroes is a competent game, and is reasonably entertaining, particularly with a co-op buddy (works over Live). I just can't recommend spending the 800 points ($10) to actually buy it.
