Prince Xizor: 31 points, PS 7, EPT (v2.0 W12)

"When defending, a friendly ship at Range 1 may suffer 1 uncancelled [HIT] or [CRIT] result instead of you."

Prince Xizor's ability heavily encourages a strategy of committing to his survival into the endgame, where hopefully he serves as an effective finisher.

This means Veteran Instincts for Pilot Skill 9 arc dodging, and Autothrusters is an auto-include. Fire-Control System provides offense. Toss in the two titles and you're sitting at 34 points, but he's effectively more expensive as you also want to make an initiative bid. A cheap Illicit, particularly Inertial Dampeners, is also enticing.

Now we need meat shields. They need to be efficiently priced, but still provide at least a nominal threat. This is now a serious struggle, as X-Wing is perhaps in the most lethal era of its history. Missile Boats would have been ideal, but Scum possesses no chunky counterpart at the necessary price point. I settled on Kihraxz Fighters as the least worthless option.

Crimeboss - Rank J(ank)

(34) Prince Xizor: Veteran Instincts, Fire-Control System, Autothrusters, StarViper Mk. II, Virago
(21) Cartel Maurader: XX-23 S-Thread Tracers, Black Market Slicer Tools, Guidance Chips, Munitions Failsafe, Pulsed Ray Shield,Vaksai
(21) Cartel Maurader: XX-23 S-Thread Tracers, Black Market Slicer Tools, Guidance Chips, Munitions Failsafe, Pulsed Ray Shield,Vaksai

(97)

The Mauraders are loaded with janky (but free) support elements, as well as Pulsed Ray Shield to be able to draw more fire off of Xizor. The 3 point bid helps Xizor outfly his fellow PS 9 aces. Unfortunately, we're seeing a rash of PS 10+ for alpha missile strikes. Furthermore, those missiles are typically Harpoons, which punish the sort of formation flying Xizor craves.

StarViper Aces - Rank A

Ben Knotts Top 4'ed 2017/18 Indianapolis Regional (159 players!) with 3 StarVipers, none of which were Thweek:

(36) Prince Xizor: Push the Limit, Fire-Control System, Autothrusters, StarViper Mk. II, Virago
(32) Guri: Push the Limit, Autothrusters, StarViper Mk. II
(32) Dalan Oberos: Push the Limit, Autothrusters, StarViper Mk. II

These pilots were clearly selected without consideration for their abilities (they're essentially a bonus), but rather for their capacity to take Push the Limit. The Mk. II title permits them to stress themselves, but still manage to complete 90 degree turns with the banked barrel roll. I must admit, I never scrutinized this interaction as I dismissed PtL's cost to action economy ratio as a net negative if you had to spend the extra action to roll anyway. This isn't the case every turn, however, and I should have deliberated this build further.

Phil GC, the originator of the squad, blogs about it here, and we get further insight from Sam Page's interview with Ben Knotts.
