World of Warcraft Surveillance

The Snowden leaks revealed all manner of activities the National Security Agency has been up to, including the monitoring of video game networks.

I find the reactions of some gamers amusing. Relax bros. There's no reason to yank the ethernet out of your Xbox One. Nobody cares about your MMO cybering. The NSA has been up to these shenanigans since before you were born.

My objection is that taxpayer money is being squandered. If they are passively monitoring game channels Echelon style for red flagged chatter...I suppose. What I find ridiculous is the deployment of actual intelligence officers to trawl video games. That's the expenditure of valuable resources on operations that I can't imagine would prove fruitful. Obviously, I'm not privy to the goings ons of the intelligence community, but I'd be genuinely stunned if Hezbollah organizes their activities over rounds of Halo.
