I've always been of two minds about Hideo Kojima's work. He's a visionary auteur of the highest magnitude... and his games often veer into the terrain of the laughably ridiculous. The two aren't mutually exclusive. But there's no doubt about the man's imprint on the industry. He generated a metric grip ton of revenue for Konami over the years, and Metal Gear Solid 5 is receiving an implausible amount of praise.

I understand that things change, and that personalities can clash. But to be so petty as to threaten Kojima with legal action if he accepted that award belies a narrow-minded corporate culture.

First, Konami canceled the promising Silent Hill game, presumably over conflicts with Kojima. Then after ousting Kojima, they removed his name from all MGS5 marketing materials. And the allegations of employee mistreatment are horrid, even if they were only partially true.

Presumably, they'll keep cranking out Pro Evolution Soccer, so non-FIFA footy fans should be all right, but I fear we may have to wave a fond farewell to the hope of any decent Metal Gear, Castlevania or Silent Hill.
