Heat is the Enemy
So Sony stock took a hit after their showing at the Tokyo Game Show. Several of their Playstation 3's kept crashing and needed to be reset, presumably suffering from overheating issues. Not surprising, really - with its 8 cores and super hot GPU. We're talking about a cutting edge gaming system squeezed into a tiny case. I may have to hold off on the PS3 until better manufacturing techniques result in smaller chips and less heat. Perhaps someone will release a 3rd party supplemental cooling system. My original release 360 would freeze up under heavy extended gameplay until I slapped on the Nyko Intercooler.
This isn't anything new either; remember the original Playstation that required you to place it on its side to vent enough heat to avoid crashing? Heat really is the primary enemy. Where the heck are these superconductors that we've been promised? As nearly as we can figure it, Vargas' computer issues last week cascaded from an overheated GPU. When the fan died on my vid card, it was too hot to even touch. I'm going to build my next gaming rig before year's end, and I think I am going to try water cooling, so I can have an overclocked system with dual GPUs without worrying about turning on the air conditioner just for the computer.
