It's human nature. Unless bridled by strict discipline, we have an innate inclination for escalating excess. Game designers are not immune.
Normally, my reaction is to nod sagely and move on to the next interesting pursuit, but I am too heavily invested in the X-Wing Miniatures Game to simply shed its embrace. It's currently in an intriguing state, as it transitions from simple and elegant roots to the intricacies of combo building and exploitation of increasingly arcane timing windows. The resulting power creep has largely driven the recognizable ships from the films (such as the eponymous X-Wing) off of the competitive stage, in favor of newly released non-iconic vessels drawn from the obscure reaches of the Star Wars "Extended Universe".
A couple of years ago, random spectators would gleefully cry out, "You're playing Star Wars!" Now, onlookers are more likely to query, "What is that?" Unfortunately, power creep has currently rendered X-Wings and TIE Fighters obsolete.
