Son, We Didn't Have the Internet When I Was Your Age...
Awhile back, I was playing Ghost Recon 2 on Xbox Live, and some pre-pubescent called me a "nigg00b". Clearly, he intended it as an insult - an infantile amalgamation of racial and skill-level slurs. I expect trash-talking from strangers, whether it be on the basketball court or in the arcade, but epithets of that sort, well frankly, dem's fightin' words!
I'm too old to be engaging in fisticuffs, but back when I was a kid, that'd be an instant brawl. Of course, few would engage in such discourtesy for that very reason. Today, punks spew their venom online, safe from reprisal. Hiding behind the curtain of the internet, they know neither shame nor restraint.
If I ever catch my son behaving in such a fashion, I'll have to first smack myself upside the head for being such a crappy parent.
