"Games designed for PS3 offer incredible graphics quality, stunning gameplay, and massively improved audio and video fidelity that is simply not achievable with PS and PS2 games. Rather than concentrate on PS2 backwards compatibility, in the future, company resources will be increasingly focused on developing new games and entertainment features exclusively for PS3, truly taking advantage of this exciting technology." -David Reeves, Sony Computer Entertainment.
In the harsh light of day, I realize today's strip isn't really funny, and I apologize for that. I've just been blinded by Sony's disingenuous marketing spins on all of their mistakes. Hopefully their hypocrisy is entertaining enough.
In terms of backward compatibility, Microsoft clearly dropped the ball with the 360. But at least they made the boundaries of their errors transparent; if a game doesn't work, it simply doesn't work, and there's a clear list of titles that do work on their website. With the Playstation 3, games will load, but you won't have any idea which ones will randomly glitch, freeze, or erase your save game data.
Despite the thousands of dollars I've put into Sony coffers, they're starting to lose my business on every front (I recently replaced my Sony CRT monitor with a Samsung TFT), and I doubt I'll even consider picking up the PS3 until Christmas, assuming there's a price drop and some killer apps. Unless Sony commits another ridiculous public relations affront, I'm going to try to have this be my last piece of Sony bashing for awhile. I'll sign off with a list of bullet points summing up the issues garnering the bulk of my hate:
-Sony foisting the Blu-ray drive on us - damn thing would've been almost $300 cheaper to make without it.
-Sony touting the supreme god-like power of the PS3 - it isn't that much more powerful than the 360, and it'll take years for programmers to figure out how to take advantage of it (multi-platform titles perform better on the 360 to date).
-Sony's garbage online system - they have years to learn from Live how to do it right and that's all they can manage?
Currently Playing - Jade Empire (Xbox, 360 compatible)
Xbox Live Gamertag - Vawce
[Edit 10.5.07 - Sony announces that the new PlayStation 3 40GB model will no longer be backward compatible at all.
