I've been juggling work, family, and unlocking my golden AK-47 in Call of Duty 4...on top of getting Direman Press up and rolling. Well, it's finally up to speed, so I can now concentrate on my various columns. I'm finally playing games again, so the game review columns will be fleshed out shortly.
I've been playing The Bigs, an arcade style baseball game. I'm going to score it as a Rank A game, despite the fact that mainstream media outlets barely put it in the "8" range (I guess my Rank B is roughly equal to their "8.2569" or whatever). I've noticed that game critics will gush about how fun a game is, but if it doesn't contain required elements on their "game review checklists", they give it a lower score. They have to touch upon graphics, audio, controls, story, features, etc. without any consideration of how these disparate elements combine (or fail to combine) to provide a fun or compelling experience. You know, what games should be.
They're also schizophrenic. They'll wax eloquently about how awful or awesome something is, but then flip around and say that the game is the opposite despite their earlier points.
I found myself doing these very things. After all, I've read a ton of game reviews, and they have colored my own approach. I'm determined that I'm going to give you, the Direman Press readers, game reviews that simply get to the point of whether or not they're worth playing.
