Sonic the Werehog
The following is an IM transcript between me and Vargas after sending him the script for today's strip:
[18:07] Dee: So, as a Sonic fan...your thoughts?
[18:09] Dave: wait
[18:09] Dave: this strip is serious?
[18:09] Dave: I'm seriously asking you
[18:09] Dave: Is this SERIOUSLY what they're doing with the next sonic game?
[18:09] Dee: ROFL
[18:10] Dave: I'm going to take your smiley as "no, it's not serious".
[18:10] Dee: ROFLMAO
[18:10] Dave: BUT, I like the strip
[18:10] Dipsosis: YES, it's the next game!
[18:10] Dave: GAH!
[18:10] Dave: Okay
[18:10] Dave: I'm with the badgers
[18:10] Dave: Sega must now die
Do you remember a time when Sonic was annihilating Mario in terms of popularity and quality of games? In the early '90s, Sonic had a higher recognition quotient with kids than Mickey fucking Mouse. Youngsters, feel free to write me off as senile, because it feels more like a fevered dream than an actual memory to me as well.
Instead of building quality on that foundation of popularity, Sega allowed arrogance to follow it up with garbage (kind of like what Nintendo's doing now with the Wii). In recent years, they've abused us with the trying-way-too-hard-to-be-cool Shadow the Hedgehog and disturbating furry lovin'.
Meanwhile, the diminishing but increasingly vociferous Sonic fan base has been clamoring for the one simple thing that made Sonic cool in the first place: speed. The upcoming Sonic Unleashed looked like a complete return to form.
And then Sega showed the other half of it. WTF is wrong with them?
