So yeah, there's this University of Manchester study. Using limited resources, the researcher estimates that approximately 400,000 gold farmers worldwide earn an average of $145 a month. These estimates surmise that the revenue of this virtual industry is at least $500 million, but unverifiable data indicates that it could easily be double that.
That's one BILLION dollars.
Let's just assume for the sake of argument that this is true. It's a preposterous amount. It very nearly eclipses Blizzard's 2007 revenue. It's equivalent to the entire gross domestic product of Guyana - a whole fucking country's income.
Forbes suggests that the porn industry pulls in "as little" as $2.6 billion annually. If you take all these numbers at face value, the combined total of funds spent on subscriptions and imaginary money by World of Warcraft and other MMO players is getting awfully close to that porn industry figure.
Do you understand? You (yeah, you know who you are!) will soon be spending more on your need to gear out your digital paladins and elves and what have you, than on your need for stimulation to rub one out. The balance of nature must not be overturned in this unholy fashion! There will be dark karmic consequences!
