While I'm making vague Gears of War references, Resident Evil 5 strikes me as what Gears would look like if a Japanese studio made it. With the shift in the Resident Evil franchise to co-op gameplay and orientation toward action, the two titles now share many structural similarities, as well as analogous mechanics and design. The minion gauntlets, boss fights, ridiculous monster designs, "quick time events"...they all echo each other. Even many visual or narrative themes feel like they were recycled.
The notable differences revolve around the fussy Japanese menus and the convoluted control scheme. To fire guns, you must hold down the trigger to go into aiming mode, and then press a button to actually discharge the weapon. Hey Capcom, when you make a game with guns, squeezing the trigger on the controller should, you know, squeeze the trigger on the gun. I know it sounds crazy, but it just might work.
[Edit: I've been informed that I must have played with an alternate scheme. Others have used the left trigger to bring up the laser sight, and the right trigger to fire. My knife was mapped to my left trigger, necessitating that nonsense. Regardless, the other critiques hold entirely valid.]
[Edit Mark 2: I had to check. I was using 'Type A' controls. Then I hit the 'Restore Default Settings' selection, and it changed it to 'Type D'. WTF - A isn't default? D is for Default? GG Capcom!]
This is the generation that Western developers have officially surpassed their Japanese counterparts.

England completed his conquest of Scandinavia and has positioned armies to invade the Russian heartland. He continues to lead the game in points and strategic positioning.
France finally wrested a supply center away from Italy. He's lagging a step behind England in terms of points and tempo, and it'll be interesting to see how long their peace holds up. In the short term, France should be able to finish Italy.
Italy continues to hunker down defensively, even as she gets whittled down. She needs a drastic change in the current political alignments in order to survive.
Austria plundered Russia as Russia prepared to meet the English invasion. Austria grew to eight, tied for the points lead with England, but his position is far less secure. Russia appears intent on destroying his destroyer, and Austria has potential foes on all borders. He needs to dispatch the remaining Russian forces as efficiently as possible, and then negotiate for potential partnerships in order to remain a viable power in the game.
Basically, Austria has been spearheading English advances all game. England wouldn't be this far advanced without the repeated treacheries of Austria perpetrated against Russia.
Turkey still doesn't know what's going on. He lost Ankara to the Russians when he had sufficient force to repel them.
Russia got butchered by Austria. This was, what, Austria's fifth betrayal of Russian good intent? Despite numerous mutually beneficial entreaties, Austria demonstrated constancy in stabbing Russia...now almost to death. Russia elected to disband his northern army, giving England an unimpeded attack salient. Instead, he elected to keep his Silesian army, which could only be used to wreak petty but entirely justifiable vengeance on the Austrians.
Germany went with an odd selection of moves that prevented him from retaking Kiel. Instead of growing back to a meaningful three, we can only wonder how long Germany will be able to linger.
