Year of the PS3

I go through the same process every year. Pundits announce the year 200X to be the "Year of the PlayStation 3", and it always piques my interest. Invariably, I'm always let down. Unless you count my time spent watching Blu-Ray discs, my Xbox 360, PC, and even Wii rack up more game time.

God of War 3 looks like it'll be pretty cool, but no PS3 game announcements instilled a sense of "DUDE, I must purchase this for full retail price when it releases" in me. They unveiled their motion control device which, while nowhere near as cool as Microsoft's Project Natal, is probably way more immediately practical. Still, I don't care a whit. I'm already annoyed with the Nintendo Wii waggle, and it'd take a killer app to get me to purchase that wand thingy plus a PlayStation Eye.

That said, the PlayStation 3 is ---slowly--- building up a library of fine games. It just won't ever achieve the sheer dominance of its predecessors.

Diplomacy III - Spring 1905 (updated with disband)

England - Stabbed by Germany, England is now on the defensive once again. Vargas is in a dangerous situation and will need all his fleets to return to defend his homeland. A deal will need to be struck with Russia, Austria, or even the remnants of Italy to remain a viable player. Something dramatic must happen again this turn or the best England can hope to be is a kingmaker.

Germany - As mentioned, stabbed England while withdrawing from Russia. The Kaiser has decided that he wants the rest of the continent and that Russia presents a lesser menace than England. While the merit of that reasoning can be debated, what cannot be argued are the wasted turns by Steve to turn his forces around (again). Only time will tell if choosing border integrity was worth the time and position.

Italy - Bill has decided to resist the Austrian occupation but is merely a speedbump to the Austrian behemoth. The most interesting and entertaining element is what Fleet POR will do in the near future.

Austria - The treacherous Hapsburgs turned on their Russian allies for the whole of Turkey and the Balkans. Austria possesses enough firepower to attack in two directions and will make progress into Russia if he chooses to do so. The Russian south has been largely undefended while the majority of their forces clog every province in the north. In the Med, the Italian peninsula will be finished and the Austrian fleets will slide west to claim the rest of the seas.

Russia - A good news/bad news turn as the northern front has been saved, but the southern front is on the verge of collapse. Thinking that a fleet in Ank is not in proper defensive position, Linda appears to be planning to rebuild a unit in SEV in the fall. However, if the Austrians press their advantage, their southern position may fall quickly.
