I'll Get To It

I'm not prepared to award the 2009 GotY, because there are numerous titles that I have yet to catch up on. The addictive grind of Modern Warfare 2's multiplayer has monopolized all of my game time in the fourth quarter and I have yet to even touch clearly important games such as Assassin's Creed 2, Dragon Age Origins, or New Super Mario Bros Wii. Or All Star Cheer Squad 2 for that matter.

Here were some of my favorites of the ones I did manage to tackle before MW2 began its systematic destruction of my gaming patterns (I'm a little more than 60% "finished" now).

Surprisingly, three of them were PlayStation 3 exclusives: Demon's Souls, Uncharted 2, and Tekken 6. The first is a fascinating Japanese RPG, and the second is a flat out joy of an action/adventure game that is a standard bearer for the platform. It almost singlehandedly justifies a PS3 purchase. Tekken 6 is the finest in the series since the original PlayStation Tekken 3, and I enjoyed it even more than Street Fighter IV.

I also love Forza Motorsport 3, although it's merely an incremental evolution of its LANDMARK predecessor. No other sim racer even comes close to these games. For wacky arcade racing, Excitebots actually gave me a reason to turn on my Wii.

Finally, Batman: Arkham Asylum was terrific. It's somewhat formulaic and derivative, but there's just no denying how satisfyingly entertaining it is.

I'll pick an official winner, runner up, and honorable mentions...eventually.
