Final Fantasy XIII Dialogue


I try to avoid doing comic strips that are too specific as they tend to be inaccessible to the general audience, but I figured a couple million gamers have had a chance to peruse Final Fantasy XIII by now. FF 13 feels new and archaic at the same time. The updated battle system is pretty slick and the visuals are...sumptuous. The design choices, on the other hand, are embarrassingly 1997, and the dialogue is simply painful. THIS IS WHAT HEROES DO, you see.

I'm not too far in, and it's clearly a slow burn until the good stuff, which I am continually assured by my peers is awaiting me. I am definitely enjoying the game, but I need to take breaks to replenish my resistance to the awkward and confusing aspects of its presentation. Frankly, I'd be fucking clueless without the datalog. It's a collection of textual exposition explaining WTF just happened and why the characters are doing what they're doing. No, simply playing and paying attention to actions and dialogue is insufficient. When I'm done, I'll have a fuller review. (Yes, I am finally beginning to emerge from the black pit of Modern Warfare 2; my dick is pretty tender.)

Okay, so at this point, the cat's out of the bag and I can speak freely. Austria has clearly been in cahoots with Italy since the inception of the game. This has ensured survival (which is of constant and paramount concern to Austria's opening) as well as modest growth. However, the partnership has not yielded equitable endowment, so we are forced to wonder at what point Austria might make his play against the hand that feeds him.

England has had a difficult time securing purchase upon the continent due to a stubbornly resistant France. Growth is imperative to keep up with the other major powers. Fortunately, Russia's new woes has removed the Scandinavian threat, and the cooperation with Germany appears to be intact. If France is to be conquered, it must be swift, as the specter of Italian expansion must be accounted for in every decision.

France is dug in and fighting for survival. In addition to the Anglo-German assault, an "errant" Italian fleet now threatens French holdings. Still, all things considered, France is in remarkably good shape, having lost no supply centers. Perhaps a shifting political climate will offer the necessary leverage for a diplomatic salvation.

Germany has grown to a mighty six, but a clumsy turn has left the Kaiser out of tactical position to capitalize. These sort of missteps have prevented Germany from seizing the pole position and dictating the direction of the game. The German position is still healthy, but more dexterous maneuvering (both politically and tactically) will be required to ensure continued security.

Italy is now the leading power. He has control of the Mediterranean, and fresh conscripts to convoy about. He's not yet powerful enough to act unilaterally, but as long as Austria remains a staunch ally, the game is now his to lose.

Russia has been crippled by a lost turn (due to a real life earthquake :P) and aggression on multiple fronts. The loss of a supply center has forced him to abandon Scandinavian ambitions, and go into full defensive mode. If England and/or Germany elects to capitalize on this weakness, we might soon see the end of the Czar.

Turkey was played by the Austro-Italian contingent. He assisted in the cracking of the Russian front, and was simultaneously stabbed for his efforts. Turkey and Russia desperately need each other, but the bad blood of repeated distrust may prevent this cooperation.
