Kinect Marketing

Data Gathering

When I turn on my Xbox now, the decapitated Wall-E looking Kinect camera scans up and down, causing its little neck motors to whir in a sinister fashion. Then its leftmost eyehole peers at you with a red lasery gaze, like HAL from 2001: A Space Odyssey.

I found it eerie, and for a time, the Kinect's presence subtly altered my behavior. I found myself reluctant to scratch any scrotal itches, for example. Eventually, I told myself I was being silly and chalked up my paranoia to humanity's penchant to anthropomorphize objects, compounded by my own unstable mind. I mean, the thing wasn't actually watching me.

And then Microsoft goes and starts talking about how they want it to watch me.
