"Gamification" had been around for a long, long time before the stupid, stupid name got attached to it. Google, for example, uses their Image Labeler to get people to identify pictures for their search engine. They took an exceedingly tedious job, and found a way to get people to do it for them for free.

We humans are drooling Pavlovian beasts. All it takes is a progress bar, or achievement badges, or League of Sunshine Brownie Points and we sit there pushing the biscuit button until the machine programmed by The Man spits out some meaningless morsel.

We punch monkeys. We guess numbers. We do it on websites. We do it on our phones. We even game within games. We Bejewel within World of Warcraft. We fill headshot and Stealth Bomber bars in Modern Warfare (we've come to take for granted how much this changed the FPS landscape). We burn the precious hours of our finite lives chasing pats on the head.

Gamification. What a stupid word. A stupid word for us stupid people. Did I mention that I just completed every Prestige Challenge in Modern Warfare 2?
