For those of you unaware of Double Fine Productions and Tim Schafer, his resume dates back to the glory days of the point-and-click LucasArts adventure games. He's had mixed commercial success since then, but has always received overwhelming critical reception. He's also one of the very few genuinely funny people in the industry.
For their next project, Double Fine sought to raise a modest $400,000 to fund a throwback point-and-click adventure game. Instead of drumming up the usual suspects/investors, they went straight to you for donations. Essentially, $15 buys you the game. This fundraising continues until March 13. If you clicked that link, you can also see substantial perks for more generous patrons.
For those of you with deeper pockets, there are even higher levels of commitment.
As of this writing, they've raised $1.7 million dollars. I'm pleased that this ensures them a healthy profit, and that there's a mechanism for providing offbeat throwback products to the niche markets that obviously still clamor for them.
