2011 Game of the Year

Huzzah, we managed to put out this strip before summer this year!

I considered dropping Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim from contention due to its rampant bugginess. However, no other game stepped up to give it any meaningful "S Rank"-caliber competition. Skyrim is clearly the best and greatest game of 2011. Just don't pick up the unplayable PlayStation 3 version.

While there was a dearth of truly landmark titles in 2011, there were over a dozen excellent "A Rank" games. Portal 2 leads this pack with exceptional game mechanics and even better storytelling. Humor is extraordinarily difficult to pull off, and Valve makes it look easy.

I typically reserve a spot for an indie-ish game, and Bastion was the standout from this group. It featured GORGEOUS art design, a compelling tale, and cleanly implemented action-RPG mechanics.

I really wanted to acknowledge the greatness of Battlefield 3 somewhere in these awards, but a constant stream of aggravating problems (patches seem to introduce new bugs to replace the ones they fix) prevents me from giving it the nod.

This left room for Saints Row: The Third to sneak in. Like its predecessors, it's completely juvenile and crass...and incredibly entertaining. It's likely the most raw fun I had all year playing a video game. I fully recognize that I lean pretentiously toward lauding artistically ambitious games, but "the most raw fun I had all year" has got to count for something.
