My Little Pony

The new My Little Pony show has apparently surpassed cult status to official phenomenon. If you follow that IMDB link, it's currently rating at 8.3. That's flippin' 2001: A Space Odyssey territory. And the demographic fueling this megameme isn't the intended audience of little girls, but the little girls residing in the hearts of older dudes.

These "bronies" managed to inflame the 4chan boards. A counterculture of MLP haters waged a cyber-gang warfare to the point of critical troll meltdown.

And their rallying cry? Invariably, they would refer to MLP fans as "faggots" or similar epithets. The show is the most effective homophobometer I have seen to date. I've only seen half an episode, so I have only a cursory opinion about its intrinsic merits. However, its value as a winnowing tool is SOVEREIGN. It's like Kryptonite to anti-gay bigots.

And then you've got controversies like the furor over THIS character. I'm stunned that people are so invested in this show.

If it manages to hook me, I've got two seasons of this nonsense to catch up on...

I'm a Brony

Several days ago, my buddy Arturo was over at my place. He was poking around Netflix when he found that they had
My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic available for streaming. We've been seeing all the pony images, memes, threads, and all matter of nonsense cropping up all over the internet, so we decided to check out what the big deal was for ourselves. I won't speak for Arturo, but after a few episodes, I was hooked.

I admit that I had some reservation about it, being a dude watching a show intended for little girls. That is until I realized I would be letting shame prevent me from enjoying something that could be fun and joyful. I said, "Fuck you, Shame," and decided to embrace the show.

I love the art design. I love the level of polish in the animation. I love the nods to classic cartoons and pop culture references. I love the quirky and distinct characters.

I'm a brony.
