I Am Spartacus!

People who aren't properly indoctrinated into geek culture seem confused by our comics. They tell me, "Dee, you're quite obviously a genius, and I'm sure the strip is scathingly hilarious, but my philistine mind doesn't get it."

It's kind of lame to explain the jokes, but for those who have never played role-playing games, those "caltrops" are 4-sided dice. These diabolical plastic pyramids hurt like the dickens when you accidentally step on them. Our pal, Dave Chang, had these flat ones that were less fiendish painwise, but kept rolling for an infuriatingly long time, like the Wheel of Fortune. I'm currently in the process of designing an RPG that only uses traditional 6-sided dice.

And Vargas, don't call me Yun. Especially since no one will realize it should be pronounced like "Yune". (You'd think the people registering my immigrant parents could be bothered to spell correctly.) Everyone, my friends call me Dee. It's a contraction of David Lee (my middle name). I use this nickname because my name is Dave, Vargas is a Dave, and two of my close buds (Kang and Chang, who were groomsmen in my wedding) are also Daves. Even the fella who coded this website is a Dave.

I used to room with Chang. Incoming phone calls would go something like this:

"Hi, is Dave there?"

"Which one?"

"The Korean one?"

"Still need to narrow that down."

"The incredibly handsome one in whose presence I can sense palpable greatness?"

"Oh, you mean Dee."

A Dave by Any Other Name

Fine, fine, DEE it is.

I would have called you Dee, but I realized that it hasn't come up here yet. I guess I could have explained it, but you did a far better job :)

I COULD have called you Dave, but that just felt silly.

In any case... yeah, those D4's were a menace back in the day when we used them. Nowadays we tend to play games that don't require a D20 set. Just a handful of nice, SAFE D6's is all that we need. No more stepping on evil D4s!

Well, that's it for me. Time for some weekend time!
