/salute 2012 Olympic Games
I ended up watching and caring more about the Olympics than I had anticipated. Part of it is the blazing spotlight on spectacularly intense athletic competitions like track and field, swimming, and gymnastics that we COMPLETELY ignore at all other times. I'm a big NBA fan, so watching a mega-All Star team is a fantasy treat. And womens' beach volleyball is just...beautiful.
But beyond the marquee events, a couple of oddities snagged me with what I can only describe as a weirdly perverse fascination, similar to the temptation to rubberneck at car crashes on the freeway.
1) Trampoline. One of the judging criteria is "air time" measured by a freaking laser. That is some cutting edge Mission Impossible bizness. AND IT'S GYMNASTS JUMPING AND FLIPPING ON A TRAMPOLINE. Weird. We need to find our most agile Mormons to bring back both trampoline gold medals in 2016.
2) Handball. It's fast and furious, and without specific knowledge of the rules it's perplexingly exciting. And for some reason, I could only watch the womens' tournament. Before you accuse me of lechery, I'm not entirely certain why I like it. It's not like womens' beach volleyball, where you have preposterously fit ladies in bikinis enthusiastically hugging each other after scoring points. (You can accuse me of lechery.) The mens' side of the bracket was more athletic, but the women were more, I dunno...fierce. I wish there was a womens' handball league I could regularly watch. They throw DOWN.
And congratz to Vargas for winning at ponies!
