Nintendo Wii and Sony Playstation 3 news is just exploding. Here are the two revelations that most caught my eye:
The new Zelda, if played on the Nintendo Wii, incorporates the new gyroscopic controller. Swordfighting, archery and fishing all involve motion sensing mechanics. The Playstation 3 controller is revealed to have motion sensing capabilities as well!
PlayStation 3 price revealed: $499 for for a stripped down version with a 20GB hard drive and missing the Memory Stick, SD, and Compact Flash inputs, and without Wi-Fi capabilities nor an HDMI output. Much like the "core" Xbox 360, I don't see the point of this version at all. The Wi-Fi is necessary for communication with the PSP and other devices, and for a machine touted to usher in the HD era, missing an HDMI output is preposterous.
The premium version will set us back $599 and comes with a 60GB drive.
When they first announced the specs, I broke down the components and estimated that it would run them about $800 for the parts of each PS3. Less than a month later, Merrill Lynch's industry analyst "broke the news" that the components would run, yes, $800. When Sony announced a fall release, I made an educated guess that took account of falling costs over time and Sony's willingness to eat x% of cost: I stated that the PS3 would cost $499 and up.
