Nintendo Apology

We have a tendency to avoid apologies. We'd rather let slip a soft "my bad" at most, and just try not to fuck up again. When someone apologizes to us, we view it as a prologue to the offender hopefully getting their shit together.

In Japan, a society steeped in a culture of honor, an apology is serious business. It is a profound expression of humility and acknowledgement of disgrace. Depending on the severity of the failure, Japanese companies typically scapegoat expendable middle management to publicly eat crow. If the president of a major corporation is trotted out to apologize, you know it's a major fustercluck of epic proportions.

Nintendo prez Iwata-san has been apologizing nonstop since the inception of the 3DS/Wii U cycle. He has lost more face than the Red Skull.
