Adventures in Crowdfunding

What a fustercluck. 'We the Gamers' scratched up a cool half million, and apparently the money fell off a truck somewhere. Even that opening statement doesn't make cents. The max cut that Amazon/Kickstarter takes is 10%; that's almost a hundred Gs creatively accounted away RIGHT THERE.

Then it gets bat guano crazy. They apparently hired artists for $35K a pop, with NO CONTRACT SPECIFYING THEIR WORK OUTPUT. (And then how do you claim to have spent $3,500 on "Legal Fees Contracts"?!) One of them promptly left after collecting. I imagine the others hung around, enjoying getting paid up front without any further obligations. I also like the $15,000 for a part time Unity developer slash intern!

So then the parent company gets antsy, and demands to handle the remaining Kickstarter monies. That amounts to another $150,000 that somebody pocketed. It's all vultures tearing off bits of the carcass at this point.

I have a dim view of humanity. We screw up; things go wrong. Attributing this fiasco to "naivety" however, is akin to being surprised there's porn on the internet. I've personally witnessed Cub Scouts conducting fundraisers with greater fiduciary acumen. This degree of incompetence followed by deliberate malice is so STUNNINGLY IMPRESSIVE, that it submarined well below even my lowly expectations.
