I think he meant that he played chess in order to get the money to eat. Hustle is a word with many meanings, but the one that most applies (at least from dictionary.com) is this one:

3. To misrepresent one's skill in (a game or activity) in order to deceive someone, especially in gambling: hustle pool.

He went around making wagers and beating people for his lunch money. That's a pretty bad ass application of chess skill.
