What is a Fascist?

Postby steve on Sun Apr 27, 2008 8:39 am

OK. Two people just called me a fascist. I don't even know what that means...

What is Fascism? I've looked it up in a dictionary and an encyclopedia but the definition and ideals just aren't clicking. I realize there's a lot of negative connotation involved in it, but what is it really? What's its purpose and end game?

How about some context? Why'd they call you a fascist?

Another thing to remember about Fascism or being called a Fascist is that the people who called you that probably don't know what it means either. For a lot of people, it's become a generic 'bad thing to call someone if they're doing something you don't like' , conjuring images of dictators and Bad Guys. They might not have been aware of the actual definition at all.

@madcat- yes, i've considered that. but i'd still like to know.

I checked Wiki and found a lot of stuff on Fascism and the vagueness of its definition http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Definitions_of_fascism (see "Fascism as vague epithet")
as well as it being related to religion
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Neofascism_and_religion
so that may be related to their using the epithet Christian Fascist. Not sure.

Anyway, I'm going to bow out now that religion has become involved. I hope you can get this figured out and that you weren't too badly offended. :( Name calling like that isn't very nice. *hug*

I have seen that the term fascism will depend mostly of the experience of each country.
For you the fascism might be more related to left biased governments like Castro, Chavez or Hitler (who wasn't so left biased), here in Chile the term fascism is more related to the right wing due to the government of Pinochet (our own very dictator).
Fascism is opposite to democracy that's clear, I'll just put it as the goverment of someone, where the opposition finds it hard to survive.

So steve, I think you are not qualified for being fascist. Not even religiously, unless you plan to kill the muslim and the budist. ;)

Well, if you can wade through the main article http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fascism I think you can get a fairly good idea of what it is. I definitely don't think it applies to you, unless you are an advocate of that particular type of government, which I tend to doubt.

I always thought it was like communism, but with a dictator leading :P Don't worry Steve... they are probably some atheist emo people who have no idea what the word means, but think that it sounds poetic.

Ideologically, fascism and communism are at the extreme polar opposites of the political spectrum. The base citizen has no rights in either, but for completely different reasons.

Steve, I'm assuming that person called you a "fascist" because you actually believe in something. In our current atmosphere of "everyone is right, nothing is wrong" relativity, taking any stance by advancing an absolute can be unpopular.
