For non-football fans, a lateral is a backward (or even perpendicular to the field) pass that is permitted to touch the ground. If any of those 15 passes had been forward down the field, the play would've been called illegal.

I like how the color commentator actually says, "...or start lateralling..." just before the play begins. Freakin' Division III. Madness.
