Suicide among LBGTQ youth as a result of bullying has reached the status of an epidemic, imo, with children as young as 11-13 taking their lives after being subject to monstrous treatment at school.

(this is just one link of many, I found various articles on the suicides taking place within the month of September this year, and the rampant homophobic bullying around the world.)

In the wake of the recent string of LGBT youth suicides has come the launch of the "It Gets Better Project" where many LGBT people share their stories and their belief that yes, It Gets Better, if you can get through the hard times and the discrimination and the pain. There are others out there who are like us, who understand us, and who support our lives and our right to be here on this world, just the way we are. You're not alone, and you don't have to give up.

PFLAG Dad Sends Open Letter to Youth
“You deserve to be happy, you deserve to be alive, and you deserve to be loved.”
http://community.pflag.org/Page.aspx?pid=1330&frcrld=1

PFLAG is Parents, Families and Friends of Lesbians And Gays, (and includes bisexual and transgender people as well, even if it's not in the name). If you don't have any other supportive friends or family members in your life, there's likely a chapter somewhere near you that's full of friendly, supportive people who would be happy to help you. Here's some info about them:

(quoted from http://community.pflag.org/Page.aspx?pid=237)

Our Vision. We, the parents, families and friends of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender persons, celebrate diversity and envision a society that embraces everyone, including those of diverse sexual orientations and gender identities. Only with respect, dignity and equality for all will we reach our full potential as human beings, individually and collectively. PFLAG welcomes the participation and support of all who share in, and hope to realize this vision.

Our Mission. PFLAG promotes the health and well-being of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender persons, their families and friends through: support, to cope with an adverse society; education, to enlighten an ill-informed public; and advocacy, to end discrimination and to secure equal civil rights. Parents, Families and Friends of Lesbians and Gays provides opportunity for dialogue about sexual orientation and gender identity, and acts to create a society that is healthy and respectful of human diversity.

Our Strategic Goals

One. Build the capacity of our organization at every level so that we may have all the resources, in the form of information, people and funding, necessary to move forward in our work with the greatest possible effect.

Two. Create a world in which our young people may grow up and be educated with freedom from fear of violence, bullying and other forms of discrimination, regardless of their real or perceived gender identity or sexual orientation or that of their families.

Three. Make our vision and our message accessible to the broadest range of ethnic and cultural communities, ending the isolation of families with lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender family members within those communities.

Four. Work toward full inclusion of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender persons within their chosen communities of faith.

Five. Create a society in which all LGBT persons may openly and safely pursue the career path of their choice, and may be valued and encouraged to grow to their full potential in the workplace.

Six. Create a society in which all lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender persons may enjoy, in every aspect of their lives, full civil and legal equality and may participate fully in all the rights, privileges and obligations of full citizenship in this country.

We welcome the participation and support of all who share in our Vision and Mission and who hope to realize our goals.

I'm sad that I missed seeing this yesterday... deviantArt had a "Spirit Day" on October 20th, "an event to honor teens who have lost their lives to anti-LGBT bullying." It's continuing through Friday, and everyone is wearing/drawing Purple to represent "themes such as acceptance, love, kindness, inclusion, diversity, embracing differences, compassion, empathy," etc.

Right on. :D

http://glaadblog.org/2010/10/07/when-ri ... teens-get/

When rights differ, what messages do gay teens get?

When they hear their rights to marriage, to equality, to live unmolested, being debated; when they hear the vitriolic messages by anti-gay bigots; when they're told they are flawed, outcast, different, not 'worthy' of the same rights as other people... how do they feel? How can they grow up with a positive self-image and self-esteem, through the teenage years-- years that are hard enough without being bullied or being told their life will always be 'less' than other people's?

Is it any wonder the suicide rate among LGBTQ teens is so much higher, when they're constantly surrounded by negative messages from a society that tells them they're unwanted, undeserving of protection or happiness?

im with you madcat. i believe people have the rite to love no matter what. living in the south i see a lot of shit go down .and its not as bad as most people think but its still bad , people in my age group are ok with it for the most part but the older crowds still hold on to this 1950 mind set of perfection and fight it tooth and nail .im straight so i cant fully know how hard or depressing it can be but i have very close friends who hide it every day in fear of being fired or worse .love is love no matter how you look at it people should just get use to it.

Thanks, Dire Hippo! :D I think having friends who are accepting and supportive is a great help when things are tough. I'm sure your friends appreciate it very much! Also, I hope they are able to get through the hard times and someday have the ability to live happily and openly. Good wishes to them!
