I loved his original article (you'll note I linked it in one of my earlier posts on this thread) but I hadn't seen the follow-up. Thank you for sending it! Some of the responses just broke my heart and others made me happy so at the same time. It's powerful stuff, and I really wish more people would read and really think about his post, and about the effect their hatred has on the lives of others.

I try to do like he mentioned, and make posts that either a) try to help educate people and increase their understanding of the difficulties LGBTQ people deal with, or b) send messages of hope, love, and acceptance to others who have to deal with these things; but it's hard to not be discouraged, a lot of the time, by the things I read and hear on the internet or on TV, in magazines, etc. about how bad things still are for our community.

Still... I believe that one day things will get better, and if I can say or do even one thing that makes life a little better for even one person out there, then I'm glad. Love and best wishes to all my readers!

What. the. shit. Seriously. Why do we need full and equal recognition of the rights and humanity of LGBTQI people? So we don't get crap like this. Or thousands of other reasons, from tiny indignities and dehumanizations to full-blown assaults and murders.

Like, say, this crap:

Here we go, it's the same "blame the victim" mentality we find so loathsome when applied to rape victims, being applied to transgender youth: "If you weren't dressed that way, nothing would have happened to you, so it's your own fault."

http://www.glaad.org/blog/virginia-scho ... ing-policy
http://www.reuters.com/article/2012/02/ ... P720120211

This proposed policy is extremely problematic and amounts to nothing more than preemptive victim-blaming. It is an “effort to end bullying” that places the responsibility for safety on bullying victims, demanding that they hide their identities while side-stepping the issues that lead to bullying in the first place.

James Parrish, executive director of Equality Virginia, suggested that district administrators needed education on issues related to lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender students.

"If a girl comes to school wearing jeans and a flannel shirt, is that considered cross-gender dressing?" he told Reuters, adding that a misunderstanding of the issues could actually make the students more susceptible to bullying.

"They're calling it cross-dressing, but if that individual was wearing clothes that reflect their gender identity, that's not cross-dressing, that's appropriate gender dressing," he said.

If anything, it's extra sexual harassment/sex-based discrimination being levied against supposedly "male" students. "Girls" have their choice of any type of clothing, both the traditionally "feminine" and the traditionally "masculine" but "boys"? No way. They're allowed exactly one type of clothing, whatever is standard "masculine" for their society, and any deviation from that leads to anything from mockery to assault to murder. It's sadly one of the little-mentioned or considered points of the fight for gender equality, that in our culture, Men can only define themselves by being Not Women, and making sure that all other Men around them are strictly Not Women.

And here we have more victim-blaming "If you weren't like this it wouldn't happen" leading to the suicide deaths of several young people in Minnesota:

A while back I posted a link to an awesome article called “I’m Christian, Unless You’re Gay” (which everyone should read if they haven't already); then recently, someone sent me a link to an awesome and powerful response to it, where the article helps a young man's have the courage to come out to his mother.

Read it here!

I found other amazing stories linked from it as well, and am very happy that this article could make such changes in peoples' lives and hearts.

Read the one here where it reunited an estranged father and daughter:

and the one where it helped open the hearts of a policeman and a soldier:

If you had a child and discovered it was gay, would you be inclined to murder it?
These people would, and they make me sick:

I saw two articles today. One made me so incredibly furious I wrote to the editor and the Press Complaints Commission, the other then cheered me up in the way the author, Charlie Brooker, has been able to do with his make-pillocks-look-like-pillocks charm. I'd advise reading them in the posted order so you don't end up on a down.

Second article was hilarious; thank you for sharing! :D

As for the first article, thank you very much for writing to the editor and Press Complaints Commission. I appreciate that greatly. Hugs and cookies to you for being awesome and pro-active against that sort of disgusting bigotry.

And thank you for your kind wishes! I'm doing a bit better, thanks! :D

Good news on the LGBTQ front. In addition to Obama finally saying he supports gays and lesbians having full access to marriage (to steal a phrase from a blog I follow, I hate to give too many cookies for basic human decency, but he's still done something no other President has ever done), Argentina just passed a fantastic piece of trans*gender legislature unlinking a person's legal and medical status.

It is "a gender identity law that doesn't require a medical diagnosis in order to gain legal recognition, hormonal treatment and/or surgical procedures (including hormones and surgeries carried out in the public health system) and that doesn't require medical intervention as a condition of legal recognition."

More about this can be read here: http://www.minutouno.com.ar/minutouno/n ... de-genero/

Note, the page is in Spanish, sorry.
